Churros with Chocolate Sauce

Spain's most beloved street food — long, ridged fried dough pastry, crispy outside and soft inside, dusted with cinnamon sugar and served with a thick, dark Spanish hot chocolate for dipping. The breakfast of champions and the dessert of kings.

Ingredients

  • For churros: 250ml water, 1 tbsp sugar, 1/2 tsp salt, 250g plain flour, oil for frying
  • Cinnamon sugar: 4 tbsp sugar + 1 tsp cinnamon
  • For chocolate sauce: 200g dark chocolate, 200ml whole milk, 1 tbsp cornstarch, 2 tbsp sugar

Instructions

    Make dough: bring water, sugar, and salt to a boil. Add flour all at once. Stir vigorously until a smooth dough forms.

    Transfer to a piping bag with a star tip.

    Heat oil to 180°C. Pipe 15cm lengths into the oil. Fry 3–4 minutes until golden.

    Drain and immediately roll in cinnamon sugar.

    Make chocolate sauce: heat milk, add cornstarch and sugar, whisk until thick. Add chocolate and stir until melted.

    Serve churros immediately with warm chocolate sauce for dipping.
